Updike, The Merrymount Press...set # 303" 14 vols extra bound in publisher's half butterscotch leather/ oak wooden sculpted boards, 5 raised bands, dual contrasting spine titles gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut. Printed on watermarked paper. Highlight of Updike's career when press moved to Limited Eds., "... finer papers, larger formats, and other indulgences not permitted in day-to-day printing." Perhaps finest illustrated/ lavishly bound 20th C American Bible. Illustrations after paintings by Turner, Michelangelo, Burne-Jones, Dore, Rossetti, Rubens, and others including engraved plates by John Martin. Bound publisher's deluxe half pigskin leather & oak boards; bright; little wear. Hinges unbroken; headcaps/tailcaps complete & little worn. Leather spines a little darker than leather boards, as usual. Custom 24K gilt hand tooled leather spine labels; unchipped, of later vintage; plates/ text clean, no foxing. Hand colored plates (not found in other Hinkley Bibles) with tissue guards and intensely colored & presented on heavy matte paper. Original headbands/ tailbands present (all vols). Endpapers clean, slight darkening at center of pastedown endpapers; probably shadow of removed former owner bookplate. No owner's markings, annotations, underlining, library marks, dampstaining, or musty/ smoky aromas.
