The Bible of the American Revolution 1782 A.D., Original Bible Leaf
Printed by Robert Aitken Philadephia, 1782 A.D. The First Bible in English printed in America. Robert Aitken 1734-1802, a Quaker, left Ireland from English persecution and settled in Pennsylvania. In this country he supported the "Revolution" and determined to publish a Bible in English in violation of English Laws. In 1781 he petitioned Congress for approval and financial aid. Congress recommended the publication of an edition of 30,000 Bibles at a cost of ten thousand dollars.
